You Otter Be In Pictures

Look who was looking at me this morning. There were two, but the other was too fast for me. After snapping a couple of pictures I just sat back and enjoyed the show. The otters were playing in the bubbles and catching the occassional fish, but mainly they seemed to be just enjoying a mild November morning.

If an otter doesn't make you smile, you have a dead heart. Thank you for this great shot!

I love otters sooooo much, and especially this otter. Where did he get the bubblebath?

That's fantastic. Much better than my armadillo!

FC, this otter really made me smile when he popped up through the bubbles. I got a couple of pictures of him gobbling down a fish, too.

Sara, the bubblebath is courtesy of the water running over the spillway. There is a lot of organic matter in the water that falls from the millpond into the creek. As the water is agitated, the organics make the bubbles - sort of like seafoam ('mermaid guts') at the beach :)

Wayne, I quite enjoyed your armadillo. That is one beastie we haven't seen here yet.

I had otters swimming around and under my canoe when I was on a wilderness trip up north a few years ago. They are indeed a wonderful, playful animal to watch.

Very cute, but what, pray tell, are the bubbles? At first I wondered whether an icy and furious storm had reached you.

AC, the bubbles result from the water being agitated as it falls over the spillway of the millpond dam. Since the pond water is high in organic material, you get persistent bubbles when you churn the water up with sufficient force. We had a soaking rain several days ago so the water was coming over the spillway at a pretty good clip.

SQMojo, I do live an enchanted life and I am grateful for it. I wouldn't trade places with anyone.
