Tell Tale Signs

If you were wandering along the trail or exploring your backyard and you ran across one or two of the items pictured below, would you know what they were?

Would you immediately suspect they were the frass of this creature?

Luna Moth Caterpillar

Who knew poop could be so pretty?

They look like Rice Chex....

That's extraordinary. At first sight, I assumed they were some sort of seed pod.

Yep, what Jill said.

Or mabye some nice items for a friendship bracelet.

(Gosh, I hope Office Type doesn't click over this way.)

Haha...Rice Chex is a new one! When I do educational booths at local festivals or environmental field days, I always take along a little caterpillar frass and have people guess what it is. Seeds, beads, and berries are the three top guesses. No one has ever suggested Rice Chex before -- this would be some high fiber cereal!

And Bloggy, these little gems would make a wonderfully unique friendship bracelet -- OT would have the only one on the block :)

I wanna keep OT as my buddy.

Frass, my new word of the day!

It really does look more like a seed pod.

My SIL is always making fun of me for taking pictures of scat. But I like to try to figure out what critter left it! Found some not too long ago that made me wonder if mountain lions have returned to this area...

I've stopped short of posting the pics on my blog though, since most scat is not as pretty as in your picture! :)

Scat is a valuable tool in determining what species you have about -- keep taking those pictures!

I have a whole file of scat photos -- even took some when we were up in Maine last year :)
