I have a love/hate relationship with lichens. I love them because of their wonderous variety. I hate them because of how difficult they are to key out. Think I will just stick with the common name for this group of lichens, British Soldiers.
I think these are pretty. I love red. Anyway...are these the same things that grow on the side of a tree and show you which direction is which? Swampy...quit snickering. I'm serious here. In case I ever go to the woods and need a bit of direction. These are soft, yes? Grins*
chryscat! I would never snicker ;) You are thinking of moss, not lichens. Lichens are mostly tough and leathery. And yes, as a >very< general rule, moss tends to grow on the north side of trees. I have seen moss grow nearly all the way around trees in shaded areas though -- guess that would have us traveling in circles, eh? *g*

This one has a sort of Monet feel to it. Very nice.
I think I will use that "Monet feel" description for all of my slightly out of focus shots :)
